Fall Workday 2011 Approaching!
Posted on September 25, 2011 by hedrich
For the third year in a row, we will be hosting a fall workday in conjunction with Austin Parks and Recreation Department on the morning of Saturday, November 5, 2011. Right now it’s still hot and oh-so-dry here in Austin, but we are looking forward to the cooler temperatures of late fall so we can roll up our sleeves and work together as a community to give our park a little much-needed TLC after this brutal summer.
Genuine Joe Coffeehouse will again supply their awesome coffee to kickstart your morning and Craig O’s Pizza – Balcones will be providing post-event pizza. Be sure to thank these generous sponsors by patronizing their businesses!
We are still finalizing project plans so stay tuned for more details. You can register for the fall workday here.
It’s My Park Day 2011

Thanks for coming out for It’s My Park Day!
Pictures can be found here
We had a fantastic turnout at Brentwood Park despite iffy weather at the start. Thanks to volunteer leaders Ramona Finos and Dave Shulder and a healthy contingent of volunteers from Paragon Prep, the volleyball court looks great! And PARD has promised to fix the posts for the net. Volunteers led by Emily Wilson and Elaine Dill weeded, added new plants, dillo dirt and mulch to planting beds in the pool area. Karen Lorenzini and Denman Glober led a team to spruce up the sign planting bed. Michele Holt spearheaded an effort to clean up graffiti on park picnic tables. Almost $30 was raised during the event to be used toward graffiti abatement.
Paula Gruber and Susan Burneson manned the check-in table. Volunteer leader Phil Tomlin headed up the distribution of dillo dirt and mulch out to trees in the field (and also brought his now famous oatmeal walnut muffins for volunteers to snack on).
But the biggest accomplishment of the day was building a sense of community around our precious park! It was very inspiring to look around the park and see so many smiling faces and so much effort!
Although it’s hard to know exactly how many people turned out, we had 67 t-shirts and ALL of them were gone at the end of the event. Paragon Prep easily accounted for a third of that! Big thanks to Mark Hathaway of Paragon Prep for rallying support for this event. I’ve never seen kids working so hard!
We thank Genuine Joe Coffeehouse for the great coffee and TacoDeli for the breakfast tacos that fueled our volunteers.
We also got a chance to meet with Brian Block, Development Administrator at Austin Parks and Rec, who will be working more closely with Adopt-A-Park groups throughout the City and new Austin Parks Foundation staffer, Eric.
Thanks once again to the Austin Parks Foundation, Austin Parks and Recreation Department and Wheatsville Food Co-op for this great annual event!
